Handle With Care, 2023

Handle With Care was a three-part series of community activations centered around the intuitive resilience of Detroiters and the everyday tools of resistance we collectively utilize. This three-part series of community activations encouraged Detroiters to rediscover and nurture their internal compass for accessing joy, mutual perseverance, and dreaming within our current carceral landscape.

Through initial responses to the Detroit Justice Center’s call for artists to respond to the question, “How do you envision a world without Police or Prisons?” Founding members of Midnight Care Collective began to develop a framework of facilitation heavily inspired by the innovative methods of care generated by generations of Detroit-area movements, communities, and caretakers.

It was within these initial inquiries that Midnight Care Collective was formed: A collectively operated community container centered around the care politics of Black/Trans/Queer communal care and Black feminist principles (ie. ‘No one is free until Black Women are Free’). Midnight Care Collective seeks to lead by example by offering intentional containers for healing through an anti-carceral, anti-capitalist, holistic, and transformative set of offerings. Handle With Care is the inaugural project within the larger scope of Midnight Care Collective.
